When exploring the Ards peninsula take some time at Knockinelder Beach where you could walk along the coastal path to the National Trust cottages at Kearney or at the south end of the beach discover several more sandy coves leading towards the impressive Quintin Castle.
Knockinelder Bay Beach has two small parking areas at either end and if you travel beyond Quintin Castle you’ll come to Ballyquintin Nature Reserve at the southern tip of the peninsula. With it’s rare wild flowers and plethora of birdlife, this reserve is worth a visit.
If you are there early enough you may witness some local horses being introduced to the beach and sea in the morning sun. This day made for double firsts: “the young horse’s first trip and the three sisters first dip!”
If the wind does pick up you will find that Knockinelder gets some good waves and there is a chance that you’ll share the water with the occasional kite surfer.
